Prolotherapy

(False Treatment)

Prolotherapy injections are not FDA approved, and most studies have found no scientifically-provable benefits.

Pudendal Neuralgia Alliance could find no studies on the effectiveness of prolotherapy for pudendal neuralgia.

What Is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is a "therapy" used to treat joint and muscle pain. It is sometimes called regenerative injection therapy or proliferation therapy.‌

Prolotherapy involves injecting a sugar or saline substance into your sore joint or muscle, where it acts as an irritant. It’s thought that your body recognizes the irritant and sends immune cells and other chemicals to the area, which starts your body’s natural healing process.

Prolotherapy is an old practice that’s been around since the 1950s when a surgeon named George Halkett used it with his patients. The evidence for this treatment is limited and unclear, though.‌

Some organizations like the American College of Rheumatology don’t recommend prolotherapy. Other organizations like the American Academy for Orthopedic Medicine recommend it only for certain cases of on cases of ongoing low back pain. 1

Prolotherapy shots typically cost between $200 to $1600 per treatment depending on the area of the country and on what part of the body needs the injection. This is money that could be used on medically proven treatments for pudendal neuralgia. It is also better not to encourage doctors who offer this fake treatment by adding to their bank accounts.

Medicare is the benchmark for FDA approved procedures. If it doesn't cover one, it is probably not a good idea to go forward.

One of our objectives of Pudendal Neuralgia Alliance is to raise funds and to convince hospitals and doctors to run clinical studies on neurostimulation and other treatments such as injections of various medications.
