(False Treatment)

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the fluids in the eyes and joints. It acts as a cushion and lubricant in the joints and other tissues.

Different forms of hyaluronic acid are used for cosmetic purposes. Hyaluronic acid might also affect the way the body responds to injury and help to decrease swelling.

People also commonly take hyaluronic acid by mouth and apply it to the skin for UTIs, acid reflux, dry eyes, wound healing, aging skin, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support most of these other uses.

American College of Rheumatology and the Arthritis Foundation advise people against having hyaluronic injections to treat osteoarthritis as there is not enough evidence to show that it is safe and effective to use. 2

PNA could find no human scientific double-blind studies or trials of any kind on any benefit of Hyaluronic Acid injections as a treatment for pudendal neuralgia. Regrettably many doctors and pain management practices perform the injections and claim the work based on no evidence, but they are making a lot of money.

Make sure when you search studies, you are on the site of a reputable medical publisher such as Wiley, not a medical practice.

Cash Procedures

The procedures for pelvic pain that are proven to be safe and effective are largely covered by insurance.  Things that are deemed “experimental” or lacking evidence are typically not covered by insurance.

Medicare is the benchmark for FDA approved procedures. If it doesn't cover one, it is probably not a good idea to go forward.

One of our objectives of Pudendal Neuralgia Alliance is to raise funds and to convince hospitals and doctors to run clinical studies on neurostimulation and other treatments such as injections.
